If its just a problem with Xwindows I believe the ctrl+alt+backspace will
exit from it and put you at a prompt or you could boot up into a runlevel
without the Xwindows. With mandrake you just type linux 3 at the boot menu,
it may be similar for redhat.

it gets to the login prompt my screen flicks and I am presented with a blank
screen. I need to get a prompt to try to run Xconfigurator to see if that
is the problem but how do I do this when the screen is black?
