And what I like about using ISO 8601 is that my European co-developers don't consider me a north-american-centric luddite.

Just to tie the two threads together, ISO 8601 date format makes many Wiki things much easier, e.g.
* Index of day pages from December 2008:  ^2008\-12\-\d\d$
* Index of meeting notes in 2009: ^2009\-\d\d-\d\d_Meeting$
* Events on the third of any month: collect ^\d\d\d\d\-\d\d\-03$

OK, that last one is not useful quite so often.
