Be careful -- many programs support parts of the PNG format, but very
few handle every PNG file. Support for color management, gamma,
transparency, and 16-bit channels are often omitted, or, even for
packages that can support the capabilities, the configuration used by
your distro may not enable them, or may recognize the files but not
allow you edit parameters such as gamma.

Cinerama is a fork of gimp used in the film industry that tends to
have more "high-end" capabilities enabled. I've been compliing
ImageMagick from sources to enable lcms, but now FC6 has enable lcms.
