hehe  too many things going on... :P  sorry about that. partitions were
stuck in my head. 

Is there anything that can be causing the boot order to be changed. Is
the CD on a separate controller, or is there only one controller?
Anything with disk geo settings, like overriding the boot device order?
Could the IDE cable be using cable select causing the CD to become hda
and the drive as hdb?  

Let me do some searches.
