Er, um, I don't know anything about PCLinuxOS but I *have* had setups
where I couldn't change monitor resolution. The cause was lines
in XF86Config/xorg.conf, Section "Screen" like:

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

lacking mention of the desired mode(s). In older (XFree86, P1 CPU,
equally old video card) I had to tweak some modelines referencing the
desired modes/resolutions as well but that may be history now.
