The root command should issue a message that the filesystem was
recognized. The kernel command should report that the file was
found. If not try:

root (hdX)
chainloader +1


root (hdX,0)
chainloader +1

One of those should find your FreeBSD bootloader that you installed in
the MBR. The bootable flag is unecessary.

Grub can only boot from drives that are recognized by the bios.
