The latest. There is not a big difference in install size between
versions. Older versions will open your computer to vulnerabilities.
Also a 2.6 kernel with the prempt option should make X more useable.

As a reference my not very light install of Debian/Sarge with X,
Firefox, Mozilla, compilers, VMware, most of the KDE and Gnome libs (but
not the full suites), and a bunch of source in /usr/src is less then 1.5
GB. With a carefull install you should be able to fit a usefull system
into less then 1GB.

Don't go crazy with the swap. 256MB should be sufficient as long as you
don't plan to compile too much. Even if you do think that you may need
additional swap you can always use swapfiles on a temporary basis.
