Yes, I did
# ./configure [whoops, yes in root]

> $ make
> $ su -

Thanks for the tip, Jeff. 

I'm going to follow George's suggestion to check config.log. His
reasoning makes sense that the ./config step has probably gone wrong
somewhere.
