The MAC is stored on the ether device in a bit of eprom. Durring
device initialization the MAC will typically be copied into the bit of
ram in the ethernet chipset. Some drivers allow the OS to overwrite
that bit of ram. Other (older) drivers put the device in promiscuous
mode.
